As a kid growing up in the Hudson Valley, it was always a “big deal” to take a family trip down to NYC. For a time, it was kind of scary to see abandoned cars on cement blocks on the side of the highway. Another vivid memory of mine is of traffic jams, car windows, and seeing Keith Haring’s stunning handball court mural on the Harlem River Drive. Crack is Wack stuck with me and I still look for it when I drive down the east side.

This pin pays homage to Haring’s original masterpiece painted in 1986 prior to his arrest and the vandalization of the mural.After his release, the parks department commissioner asked Keith to repaint Crack is Wack.The second version (which has been maintained) is similar to the original but somewhat different. I love the first version and especially the photo of him next to it with his Adidas high-tops with the tongues rolled down – just like we did as kids in upstate New York back in ‘86.
