Picasso had an amazingly long and mind-numbingly productive career as an artist that spanned the better part of the 20^th century. Throughout that span, he created dozens of self-portraits but the one that struck me was the one he painted a when he was around 26 years old. I started painting in my mid-twenties and when I was studying Picasso’s work, I used this self-portrait as practice for painting fast. I guess I felt a connection to him through age. He must have slashed this painting together in about 15 minutes. It’s absolutely raw but still captures his handsomeness perfectly. Even with a huge nose and gigantic eyes, the balance is amazing. His head is turned to the left, but he’s looking straight at us.
